The North and South on Slavery:

Investigating Primary Sources from both the North and the South

As we have already read in our textbooks, the north and the south begin to collide on the issue of slavery in the mid-1800’s.  The issue never is resolved, resulting in the Civil War, which completely devastated the country.  In order to find out how passionately each side felt about the issue, we will take a look at newspaper articles from two communities in the south.  The Northern Community is Franklin County Pennsylvania; the Southern Community is Augusta County, Virginia.

The website that we will be using is called the Valley of the Shadow.  The site is extremely comprehensive, with all kinds of primary sources at the start of the Civil War, during the war, and after the war.  The site is divided into three categories, as you can see:

The eve of war                                    the war years                                    aftermath

For our purposes in this project, we will be using The Eve of War section.

Searching the site is not easy because there are so many documents.  Narrowing down your search is your best bet.  Ms. Wallen and Mr. Wright may be able to give you some hints on how to narrow down your search to only what you want to research.  Mr. Wright has a couple of good articles on hand in case you get stuck.  These are not to be used by students who are not motivated to search properly.

Check out our search together to see how it is done!

Once you start searching on your own, you need to keep track of your articles for each region.  PRINT YOUR ARTICLE!  You need to include your articles on your poster on either side of the Venn Diagram.  This is something Ms. Wallen insists upon so that you may properly cite online sources.
